ABOUT PUSHKAR

A visit to Pushkar is assuredly a soul cleansing experience. Nature seems to have chosen this spot with care and then blessed the surrounding area with great scenic and natural beauty. A remote ancient town, a devotional city, a treasure of mythological India. This picturesque township and the I sacred lake of Pushkar have their origins rooted in myth.

The ringing of temple bells and chanting of hymns from the Ghats and Temples are heard in silence. Outside begins the great Thar desert, despite the murmer of the town, you can hear the wind whisper to the trees. 

During the great Pushkar fair, held after the festival of Diwali, Pushkar become vibrant with folk dances, magic shows, horse and camel races. Over 100,000 camels, bullocks and horses are traded during the days of the festival. Pushkar with a dozen of local fairs and festivals of 10-15 day duration is a round the year destination.

STORY OF LORD BRAHMA

The Padam (lotus) Purana (sacred legend) describes Pushkar as the place where Brahma, Lord of Creation, killed a demon with a lotus. The petals fell at three spots where lakes emerged. Pushkar is the most important of them, because Brahma performed a yagna (sacrifice) here on the full moon of Kartik (October/November). His consort, Savitri, could not be present on the occasion, so Brahma hastily married a Gurjar girl, Gayatri. When Savitri appeared she was furious. She cursed all those present, and said that Brahma would be worshiped at Pushkar only
